  • I want to know about English literature. How should I start?
How much time do you wish to spend on learning English literature? The only answer worthwhile is FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. If you are prepared to do that, then your motivation should not be for any school. You should WANT to do it for its own sake and for your own sake. I am going to assume that learning English literature is not so terribly important to you. Perhaps you have only a vague idea that somehow it may pay off in some future endeavor. If so, take a college course or two or three on low level Intro to Lit courses. After doing this, you can better decide exactly how dedicated you are.
But now I shall assume you have a burning desire to master all aspects of English Literature and you wish to spend the rest of your life pursuing your goal. I will make this life time goal easy to start. You need buy only one book. I recommend a latest copy of a Handbook to Literature which is a sort of dictionary/encyclopedia of literary terms. Turn to the section called Periods of English literature and copy out the periods beginning with the Anglo-Saxon right through to modern day. Choose a few works from the first period (perhaps Beowulf?) and read it. The key to really learning anything is a two step process. (1) Read (2) Write about it. It is the writing that allows you to sharpen your ability to comprehend what you read. Repeat this process with each period.
